Directions: Summarize your experience with the three-read process of the Anne Lamott text (not what you learned, but how the process helped you read this text, and might help you read other texts in the future). If the process did not help your comprehension of the Lamott text, please state so, but summarize why you did not benefit from this method of reading and what you might do instead to help with text comprehension. The post should not state emotion or opinion about either the text or the three-read process, but should, instead, concentrate on explaining the experience objectively. Your reply should be no longer than 200 words. (Due before class on September 3rd.)
Reply: Comment on a classmate's ability to relate his/her experience in the fashion of a summary. If you believe s/he wrote more of a narrative/analysis than a summary, make one suggestion for what s/he might do for his/her summary for the Davidson text. Your response needs to be at least three sentences long, and must contain constructive criticism. (Due before 5pm on September 5th)
Stay professional with your posts. Also, remember that this is a community forum. Take what your classmates say with a grain of salt, but also take advantage of the crowdsourcing.
There will be links I will provide in-post in order to clarify the meaning of words and ideas. Sometimes Blogger will sneak in its own links. These will be underlined twice and are ads. I would encourage you to look up unknown words and ideas on your own. If not for your own mental stimulation, collecting words will help you build your extra credit project.
I’ve never read a text using the three-read process before this assignment. This process has you break the text down into sections to get a better idea of the authors intention for the article. Taking a text one piece at a time for future papers will be especially helpful, and was in this case as well. For instance when you have longer texts you need to get through, or time management constraints for other classes. Students can use this simple process to quickly and efficiently comprehend what the author is saying.

I agree with Megan concerning the time constraints college students have and how the three-read system helps minimize the time it takes to read and understand a text. I feel anything that simplifies the process of understanding a text is a helpful tool.
DeleteI agree with your point about the value of having the three read process as a tool in the understanding tool box . I am ready to try it on something a bit long to see how much it helps . When the author dose not have a clear voice will the three read process make as much of a difference I hope so.
DeleteI definitely agree with the time constraints aspects everyone is getting at. I saw that the three-read process helped point out the authors intention of the writing as well. I'm eager with Andrew to try it out on something a little more complex.
DeleteI agree with Alex. Time constraints is definitely something I am struggling with as well, but I know it'll be worth it in the long run. I believe I just need to get into a good reading flow with this new technique to not have it be so awkward.

ReplyDeleteMy career choice is Sociology, Social work and or counseling fields. English is of great importance to me in my fields of study because thinking creatively and intelligently is the basis of any intellectual conversation between 2 or more people. You must be able to think outside the box and appeal to people’s creative sense in order to interact with them on a meaningful level. This will definitely help me to learn to be creative and original in all the exercises in writing we will be doing. All the college level essay writing will be of tremendous value to me in achieving my goals in this class. This class also offers many venues for improving my writing skills, some of which are textbooks, Writing Center, Learning Center, Oasis and tutors, all of which will be used frequently by me.
In the field of counseling communicating with others on an intelligent meaningful level is vital to my success in my field and English 121 will help me on every level in this endeavor. To achieve my goals for this class I intend to put forth my best effort to read all material assigned in the class and to take the time to understand and comprehend it. I will put forth the time and effort it takes to write appropriate college level essays that are required. Interacting with other people is most important in my field of study and this English class is my #1 priority because it teaches creativity and the importance of correct college level English in all phases of communication.
I like what Karen said about "this class offers many venues for improving writing." I agree with this especially when it comes to the 3-read process.

The three read process seams like something I may have been taught before, However I have been out of school so long it seamed new to me. The point of the process seams really solid in helping to up understanding in a shorter time frame then the old one read process. The uses of this process do appear to have a direct value in up coming classes by saving time and brain power. Right now this text is so small that the three read process did not make a huge difference but as class goes on I am sure this is going to be a life saver on long text and assigned reading. The one thing I know about collage is that there will be tomb after tomb to read and try to comprehend so the three read process is going to be super effective in helping me get through them. Also I think that in some of my personal fun reading my also be improved by the three read in that even fun reading can be done fast but improved comprehension. I am the most curious how well the process works when the text being read is long dry boring and uninteresting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement. I believe too, that when the longer reading assignments come along this process will be a life saver in helping us get through and be able to comprehend what we are reading in a fun way.
DeleteI was tentative to say the three-read process helped me with the reading at first. The process in a way rewrote my way of analyzing writing to better understand the point. Traditionally in the past I’ve just read on a topic once or twice to get the main points and carried on. I had to sit down and try it again on my own time to figure out if it was helping me, or just leading me down a path my thought process wouldn’t follow. In reading the first and last paragraphs first my original process was already shot and almost seemed to confuse me more. But as I went through the second reading it made more sense having the base on which the writing was trying to get across. In the last reading I felt like I had a good sense of what the author was trying to get across and I read the text faster than I would have with my original methods. I think the process is really going to help me and anyone willing to change up their thought process a little.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point about it seeming almost confusing in the first reading. The three read process does take some getting used to but I agree that it can be very beneficial to the reader. As well as agreeing in the fact that the reader has to be willing to accept the change in their thinking and reading process to be able for this to have any impact.
DeleteI am an extremely slow reader, so the three read process was quite time consuming. I prefer to antedate as I read, marking key points and places in any text, although skimming of the text was a beneficial. The three read process benefited me in the complete comprehension of the text even if it took me a little more time. I feel this process will be a great help in not only my academic writing and reading, but also in my mathematics course. Surely I will grasp this process with a little getting used to it. It may take a slight bit more time, but has the potential to help me scrutinize any text in greater detail. Learning this process will be required for a successful completion of not only this course, but every course I will take in my college years. Learning this method will be a challenge, to unlearning my previous hasty analysis habits.
ReplyDeleteBefore this assignment I have never used the three read process. I have learned that it can be a pretty slow process, but it is very effective. In a way it helped revamp how I analyze writing and the way I read as well. Skimming was something I should have done but never really did, and I have certainly not ever read an article three times to understand its full meaning. After I did this though, the article really stuck and even now I can look back on it and remember what I read. Which was always a hard process for me to do. I feel the more I practice this learning process the more it will just become second nature and I will be able to fully understand what I am reading and be able to retain it for a long time. This process also helped in my writing skills, not to be so afraid of my first draft and to just get it out there and then go back and make it into a functional and correct essay or summary or whatever I may be writing at the time. Learning this method will be a good challenge.
ReplyDeleteThe 3-read food tasting process truly helped me understand the Lammott text. Comprehension of texts has always been quite a struggle for me and it seems I finally have a way I can confidently read a piece of work and understand it in its entirety. The 3-read process gives ample time to allow critical thinking and analysis, as well as an opportunity to reflect on what was just read.
ReplyDeleteExamining the text right off the bat gives a general understanding about the context surrounding the piece.
Then you read the text at a normal pace helps not to become distracted or stressed out about what you are reading. You need to get an idea, a feel for the piece before you can truly comprehend the article as a whole.
Giving it a last good read now is all that really needs to be done. When you finish asking questions about the theme and biases in the text is very important to this last step, and allows you to be able to have grounds for a good argument without seeming like you don't actually know what you're talking about. That is what we're all looking for right? Not sounding incompetent?

ReplyDeleteThree Read Process - Summary
This process of reading I found to be very helpful because it allowed me to gain understanding of the author's background and possible reasoning for techniques in writing that i may have difficulty to accept, or reject. Also, it helps me decide if the piece I am about to read is interesting to me. It allows me to ask myself if I can relate to the author, or if I may have anything in common with him or her. This may, or may not aid in my comprehension of reading material.
Once my attention is directed toward the piece I am about to read, I can maybe now stay focused on what I am reading . Because this seems to be an issue for me, I am very thankful for helpful tools that will aid me to have a pleasant, retainable experience. Breaking the actual process of reading down in this manner allows more comprenhension and therefore, focus and ability to retain the material alot more probable. This ensures the fullfillment and satisfaction of the reading.
I have never used the three read process and was skeptical as to if it was going to help my understanding better. When we used the process to read Anne Lamott’s text using the three read process it instantly helped grasp what the text possibly described. The first read helped me get an idea of what to expect, the second read helped me to establish a good understanding of what she wrote, and lastly the third read made clarifications for any questions I may have had to begin with. The three read process is very helpful and an amazing tool to use when reading, not only for academic purposes, and should be taught by more instructors and utilized by more students. All in all, the three read process helped me understand Lamott’s writing and I will continue to use the process throughout the rest of my schooling to ensure my understanding of anything I read.
ReplyDeleteThe three read process is something I agree but disagree on. The first read of the process I partly disagree on. Looking at the appearance of a paper does not help me. Unless there are pictures the appearance just looks like a bunch of words all put together. Pictures and an introduction do help me to understand what to expect from the paper or the author. Based on only appearance and presentation I don’t believe I could make a good summary. The foundation or second taste is everything for me; it answers all of my questions about the reading and thus helps me understand everything about it. With the third process I usually don’t argue a paper unless it is really opinionated or if I feel its lying. I don’t like to make changes to papers; I don’t feel comfortable to do that unless it is a grammar change. So therefore I use most of the three read process but not all of it.
ReplyDeleteNow there is something to think about. My understanding of the first part of the 3 read process has me focused on information about the author. Maybe getting an understanding of why writing techniques, or words are the way they are in the reading. It is awesome to see an honest opinion of the process.
DeleteWhen it comes to reading people generally tend to skim through the text, forgetting everything they just read, causing it to be more time consuming in having to re-read it all over again. I believe the three-read process is not only beneficial for your knowledge in what you are reading, but saves you more time. It’ a shorter process, and helps you obtain more information. Throughout the semester we will most likely have long reading assignments, but with this new process I believe we will be able to understand the information that we are learning about. The three-read process helps you narrow down the topics that the writer is discussing, making the text more noticeable and obtainable. I have never used this process before, but i believe it will help the whole class comprehend text better in a new fun way. I am excited to try out this new technique with my reading assignments and think it will be beneficial to not only me, but the class as a whole.
