Claims and Evidence

Directions: First, state your working thesis or your thesis question. Next, list one source (in MLA format) that you think will help to support your main claim. Then, state why you think that source will help you to prove your claim.

Due before class on November 19th.

Reply to Classmate: ask a classmate a question about the source and/or the claim that might help provoke further research. OR, if you have a source you think would be useful to your classmate (either one you are using or one you might have come across in your Wonderland travels), please share that information with your classmate.

Reply due before 5pm on Friday, November 21st.

  1. Colorado immigrants have finally obtained the right to state driver’s licenses, but underfunding has created many problems in the authorization system and the hiring of trained officials. Walton, Lisa. "Undocumented immigrants line up to get new Colorado driver's licenses, ID cards." Gazette, The (Colorado Springs, CO) 16 July 2014: Newspaper Source. Web. 18 Nov. 2014. This source is relevant and lucky enough I found it on the library databases.

  3. Is responsible accountability being displayed by corporations that violate protection laws against the environment, given the mandated penalties as a form of punishment, and are the penalties just?

Corporations have an obligation to adhere to laws set in place for the purpose of protecting human and biological life, from chemicals with harmful effects. However, penalties for violations as the source of repercussions are not showing proof that they measure up to the crimes committed against the environment.

    News Release dated- 9/15/14:
Announcement of a settlement with DuPont for penalty for a violation of a regulation that was committed through at least 3 years. 2 employees from the epa are involved with this news release. It contains important facts relating to the results of this violation, and the devastation caused. Also, points out a very small fine, comparative to the devastation.

    1. I found this website that states the environment laws that companies must follow. I think this is a great topic given DuPont blankly ignoring these crucial issues. http://www.law.uchicago.edu/files/files/71.Lott_.Environment.pdf

  4. Academic question: Does human interaction inhibit the forests natural cycle of forest destruction and regrowth?

Working thesis: In observing the natural cycles of forest destruction and regrowth, those affected by devastating “monster” fires can begin to see a need for natural, more controllable, wildfires.

This source basically is a study on the effects of human impact on fire regimes, making it super relevant and useful for facts and studies preformed on my topic.

    2. Awesome topic that should be of great interest. Do you think that info from the EPA's Dfe Alternative Assessments on fire retardant studies may be of interest to you, or may help support your thesis? During my researching, I ran across some pretty important info that maybe you want to check out . www.epa.gov/dfe/alternative_assessments.html

    3. Do you think that we should not interfere with wildfires natural course? If so do you think the fires would do more damage than good to the forest and wildlife?
