Reflection - Synthesis

Directions: You have now officially become awesome. Congratulations! Remember when you couldn't write a research paper? Think about how far you have come! But...think about that for your in-class Final.....

For now, summarize what you learned during Unit 4: from developing a topic to researching that topic to synthesizing your research for that topic into the paper you just wrote, explain what was most helpful and what you wish you knew more about. 100-200 words.

Due before midnight on December 5th (so, by 11:59 p.m. on December 5th).

  1. In unit 4 I learned several helpful tools for developing my writing skills. The tool that I found most useful during the semester was how to evaluate sources that are being used for a paper. This was of relevance because, many times I may credit a source when in fact the source is not viable. Another useful part of this class was learning about the S.O.A.P.S., and developing and improving our writing techniques through the papers we were assigned. What I wish I knew more about was how to properly develop a Chicago style paper along side the MLA style of writing that we learned. This would be very useful for the humanities courses that I am required to take, that may require the use of the Chicago Style template for my assigned papers.

    Thanks,

  2. In this last unit, I feel like I learned a lot of new things that I never new about before. It was very helpful learning about evaluations resources, because no class that I have ever taken before shared how to do it correctly. I believe I finally got my work cited page correct in this unit because we had to look up our own resources. The pre-synthesis assignment helped me created an outline for my essay, in an easier more effective way. I liked how you gave us examples of how our papers should look like in MLA style and how our work cited page should look like.

  3. When selecting my topic, I became a little worried that it might become to bias because immigration policy is a conflicting topic in America. I found it hilarious that President Obama announces the need to reform a day after I had chosen the topic, Ironic right? When researching my topic I even found myself changing the perspective of my paper. The Pikes Peak Library is fantastic I found many of my resources there, and the citing was a lot easier this time. Condensing my topic was the most difficult because there is so many aspects to immigration policy, but the Writing Center helped concise my wording through the essay Unit Four has defiantly taught me the value of credibility and citing.

  4. This unit was a lot of work by myself . I worked had to make sure that thoroughly research my topic so that I felt like I understood the issue and both side of the argument as well as how credible they are. As I have more then a few investment that requier researsh to keep up with I am finding tools from this unit to be very helpful. I had no Idea that while doing this I would be asked to do some research for my family company on pharmaceutical refining. The weird overlap of projects was a happy coincidence. However this did not lighten the work load if anything it doubled it. With the help of my LBH and some of the check list I will be keeping to help with my work in the future.

  5. This paper, though the topic unnerving, was the most interesting. The researching of another topic is how I stumbled upon a much bigger argument. Much more important. I did worry I would show bias and too much passion. However, I kept my cool. For the most part. A couple of months ago, I could not see myself writing academically at all. There is definitely plenty of room for huge improvement, but I do feel more confident in my writing. The reading of “How to Write with Style” seemed to motivate me. But most helpful to me was the checklist assignment sheets. The CRAAP list is also helpful, when resourcing. I will be using for any future research assignments. But the checklist, was most helpful to me. I really enjoyed this assignment, and notice a big difference in how I use words in a paper, structure seems better. All-in-all, there is progress.
