Practice - Final

Directions: Read your diagnostic. Beyond the notable difference in your writing ability, look at the goal you set for yourself. For this blog, write about 100-200 words to start off what will (during the next class session) become your Final. Discuss the goal you set for yourself at the beginning of class, and then detail (briefly) how/why you did or did not achieve that goal. This could become your thesis statement/introduction. IF you did not achieve your initial class goal, did you adopt a new goal as the class progressed? Did you accomplish the new goal? Why or why not?

Due before 10pm on December 8th. (We will begin--and hopefully finish--writing this blog in class.)

  1. My Primary goal for English 121 was to obtain a B grade or better. I achieved this goal from actively learning, thinking critically and creatively, communication with the writing center, and expanding my knowledge through the use of “The Little Brown Handbook.” I applied these objectives effectively in class time; as well as during study/ homework hours. I also critically and creatively analyzed a text as a whole; rather then from my perspective alone, which helped me to write a creative and well thought out and evidence based essay, paper, or analysis. All of these aspects of that I used in the class helped in the goal to achieve a B grade or better.

  2. At the beginning of my semester in English 121, I was unfamiliar with in- text citations. So I made it a personal goal to understand and practice the formatting. Trial and error was the only way I was able to accomplish my goal, Eventually, I did grasp my goal unfortunately it wasn’t until the end of the semester. Understanding these writing formats will help me with many of my future papers, because it will save me from plagiarizing other people’s ideas. I think learning in- text citations is the most beneficial writing tool that I have learned in English 121.

  3. At the beginning of English 121, I struggled with letting others read my essays because it made me feel insecure about my writing. Throughout the course of the semester, as we had more peer reviews and I had one on one interactions in the writing center, they helped me establish my papers. Those who critiqued my papers gave me information that helped me improved my papers, giving me both positive and negative feedback. I didn’t know that college papers required MLA format or work cited papers but the outlines, readings, and blogs we had in class were great ways for me to practice and accomplished my goal; to create a well-written essay, on college level.

  4. Looking back at my diagnostic, I have learned how to write a college paper, I have learned how to think clearly about issues that I am passionate about. Think through facts instead of irrationally forming opinions. It has been a struggle for my first semester. It has been worth I. I have learned how to form arguements by having a better understanding of how to use resources and techniques for determining the differences between ethos, pathos, logos. The writing center and the workshops were very helpful as well. I have become more confident in my writing skills. All-in-all I believe I have attained the goals I set for myself in this class. It definately has been a beneficial challenge.

  5. At the begging of the semester the amount of time I have been out of school and my time in the Army did my academic writing no favors. I set very reasonable goals for myself and did what I could to meet or exceed all of them. My biggest problem was missing any days of class if I could have been in each and every class my mastery of the subject would be much closer. I had to adjust my goals with the reality of my life and my school goals had to be changed to making sure I made the most of the time I had and give my best effort to any work I can get done finished and turned in. I feel like I have given my best effort with the time I had left. As I reflect on this last semester I feel like my goal had to be shifted to be accomplished but I did.
